Running from the rain to the North-western part of the Philippines

Pagudpud

During our second week in the Philippines we headed towards the North-western part of Luzon.

It took us 5 hours to reach the first stop in the West. Pagudpud. Where Filipinos dry their rice even in the middle of the main roads and streets. Here you can easily find a nice beach just for two 🙂 If you have ever wondered how Boracay looked before the tourism boom, then this little town should be your next destination 🙂 With the beaches as white as Mister Beavers teeth in Colgate ads. Palms growing almost in the sea. Cristal blue water. Seriously, it’s only in Boracay that we’ve ever seen such clear water. And all of this just for you – no foreign tourists! This means no vendors in the beaches or on streets, tons of low-priced homestays (10 EUR per night) and cheap local food! If you ever go there, we recommend Saud beach 🙂 Would stay here forever, but the heavy rains have come here too.

Vigan

Three hours on an old-school bus where the aircon is the window and we’re in Vigan. It’s one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. The town was founded by a Spanish colonist. Thank God it was not destroyed by the war. The buildings were so gorgeous on every way we went. However, it still seems that for Asian tourists we are far greater attraction than the town itself 😀 So again lots of attention and of course tons of selfies 🙂 So while others are looking at us, we’re exploring the city. Imagine streets with old colonial houses where the main means of transportation is carriages. This is Vigan. Walking the streets here, you can get a feeling the time machine has just brought you several hundred years ago.

San Juan

The next morning we hit the road again. 3 more hours on an old bus and we reached San Juan, a surfers’ mecca in Luzon. Sadly, this one’s only for experienced surfers. Beginner surfers like us were staying on the beach enjoying the view. Waves here are crazy and the shore is rocky. Of course, that’s no problem for the locals, since they jump to the sea with their boards straight from atop the rocks 🙂
